Akata Witch

Akata Witch is an urban fantasy novel by Nnedi Okorafor that takes place in contemporary America. The protagonist, Sunny, is a young Nigerian-American girl with magical powers who is born into a family of witches. Sunny is confused about her identity and her future until she meets a mysterious stranger who becomes her mentor and teaches her about the history of magic. Sunny learns that she was adopted into the family as an infant and she has a twin sister named Ayodele, but she does not know who their parents are. The book explores the complexity of identity and race in America as well as the impact of colonialism on African culture.
